ABOUT

Bad Attic

What is Bad Attic?

My name is Masa. Born in Tokyo and raised in Yokohama, I am the founder, sculptor, painter, and graphic designer behind Bad Attic, an independent brand I started in 2015. I handle every single step of the creation process myself—from hand-sculpting prototypes in Super Sculpey clay to painting, packaging, and visual design. My art is primarily brought to life through the classic formats of Japanese soft vinyl (Sofubi) and resin casting.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the world of vintage horror toys from the 1960s through the 1980s. My expression is deeply rooted in the culture of vintage Halloween novelties, monster rubber masks, Topstone creations, Garbage Pail Kids, and especially Madballs. I’ve always held a special admiration for bootleg toy culture, particularly how Madballs managed to push the boundaries of original character design within the strict physical limitation of a sphere. While many choose traditional fine arts, I found that the toy format was the ultimate medium to express my vision.

To recreate the authentic spirit of that era, I rely entirely on traditional analog sculpting. I intentionally avoid slick, digitally perfected, or overly flattened surfaces. Instead, I preserve the organic curves, subtle unevenness, and natural imperfections that only hand-molded clay can produce. These physical textures are what give my creations their distinct vintage soul and tactile warmth.

One of my definitive original designs is Trouballz—a line of sphere-shaped monster characters driven by a impulse to cause chaos, serving as a direct tribute to the Madballs format that inspired me.

My goal with Bad Attic is to embrace concepts that are ugly yet beautiful, creepy yet endearing, infused with the satirical tone of Garbage Pail Kids. When you hold a piece from Bad Attic, I want you to feel a wave of nostalgia—a raw, tactile warmth combined with that delightfully grotesque, monstrous charm that made classic horror toys so unforgettable.
